Castañeda

Castañeda is a small village with historical significance on the Camino de Santiago. In the 12th century, during the construction of the Santa María la Real Monastery in nearby Aguilar de Campoo, large quantities of limestone were transported from quarries in Castañeda to the construction site. This limestone was used to build the iconic Romanesque architecture of the monastery. Pilgrims traveling along the Camino de Frances would pass through Castañeda and witness the remnants of this historical activity. Today, the village maintains its rural charm and offers essential services to pilgrims, such as a church, a hostel, and a few bars and restaurants. The Church of San Juan, a Romanesque building with a unique bell tower, is a notable landmark in Castañeda that pilgrims can visit as they continue their journey.
