In the 9th century, a miracle known as the "Milagro de Santo Domingo" took place in the village's church, Iglesia de Santa María la Real. According to the legend, a local peasant named Juan Santín, who was devoted to the Eucharist, braved a snowstorm to attend Mass. The priest, who was skeptical of the miracle of transubstantiation, was astonished to see the bread and wine transform into the body and blood of Christ before his eyes. This event is commemorated by a silver chalice and paten, which are still displayed in the church today. O Cebreiro has long been a significant stop for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago due to its historical and religious importance, as well as its location at the entrance to Galicia.
