Was unsure what we were going to get when we booked a bed at Marcellos. When we arrived we were warmly greeted by our host. Whilst the accommodation is outdated, the beds were clean and comfortable, fresh linen sheets and blankets were offered and the bathroom was clean, with a great hot shower after our long walk. The best part, the meal Marcello cooked for us, delicious 😋 This is a must if you are staying here.
A very positive experience overall. Marcello is a very funny guy. The layout was nice— lots of wood like a hunting lodge. Real sheets/blankets and the bottom beds had curtains. A bonus was that there were fans set up upstairs and downstairs, which is uncommon for Spanish albergues. I thought the dinner was very nice but a bit expensive at 16 euros; optional of course. It’s on the other side of town from where you enter, but actually quite close to where the Camino leaves, so a good choice if you want to depart early and get breakfast in the next town.
We entered the town and wound our way to the trail leading out of town, and there was our little oasis! Marcelo greeted us and made a real wax stamp for our credentials ❤️ Upstairs: Bunk beds that are tall enough to sit on and long enough for tall pilgrims. Each bed had an outlet and light. Clean sheets and comforters too! But, let me tell you about the splendid dinner! Marcelo treats you like family and the Italian pasta with a huge fresh salad was so tasty. Wine and bread was abundant. Flan for dessert. Thank you for the wonderful time.
Overall, ok experience. The dorm and toilets/ showers were more than adequate and very clean. The man running the place did come across a bit unwelcoming to me (single male pilgrim). He acted as if he were doing me a big favour, allowing me to stay there and took every opportunity to try and charge me for "extra". For example, on arrival he offered me a "special stamp" and seemed put out when i said no thanks. Then, I asked where I could get drinking water, and instead of admitting that the tap water was drinkable, he was selling me water bottles. Later on, I needed to use the drier, which cost me €4, but my clothes were not anywhere near dry afterwards. He insisted they had been too wet to begin with (a few quick dry t shirts, 2 pairs of boxers, and 4 socks). Otherwise, this place is ok
Marcello is such a great host and the place has a lot of personality! His hospitality is something that has to be lived during your Camino. The community dinner was also really lovely and quite generous (don't eat much beforehand). The place is small but cozy and it feels like home. Of course like everything in the camino, don't expect any fancy stuff just pure love and generosity.
