Portomarín is a picturesque town in the province of Lugo, Galicia, with a rich history dating back to Roman times. The town is situated on the banks of the Miño River and is known for its unique architecture, including the Church of San Juan, which was built in the 12th century by the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. This church was later moved stone by stone to its current location when the Belesar Reservoir was constructed in the 1960s, causing the original town to be submerged underwater. Throughout the Middle Ages, Portomarín was an important stop for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago due to its strategic location and the presence of a medieval bridge that crossed the Miño River. The town offered essential services such as accommodation, food, and medical assistance to the weary travelers. Today, Portomarín continues to welcome pilgrims, providing modern amenities while maintaining its historical charm.
