We were very positively surprised by the place. The beautiful building is obviously very old but inside everything is new and modern, kept tidy and clean. Staff is very attentive. All facilities a pilgrim requires are provided. The pilgrim's meal is cheap, tasty and plenty. Couldn't ask for more, especially considering the price.
Could have enjoyed this place for many reasons. They did our laundry and do have hand washing facilities. However I hung up a wet coat and found the place was locked so had to ask for a key when returning from dinner. No dorm rooms just floors of 40+ people in sections of 4. Corridor lights appear to be on all night so not perfect conditions for sleep. No blankets provided, they offer to sell you a blanket for €17 euro 😂😂 Dinner was very basic and there was certainly no big long tables to meet other travellers, just go to a restaurant style dinner with individual tables so best to go in a pre made group
Worst nights sleep of my life! The limited bathrooms make it difficult to sleep if you happen to be located in the beds next to them. The toilets are extremely loud and people are constantly in and out. They keep the stairway lights on and the doorway propped open so it’s quite bright all night. The doors slam every time someone goes to the restroom. Someone snored all night so that didn’t help with the sleep. We found windows open so it was freezing in the building. There were children actually running up and down our floor till at least 11pm and no one told them to stop. They also kept going into the bathroom and being extremely loud. Lastly, someone absolutely destroyed the bathroom and at 3am it smelled so bad I had to go downstairs and sleep on a chair. I absolutely would not recommend staying in this place!
Getting up to the celestial chants is amazing, beds are comfortable, location is great, there’s a chapel and there a mass with a blessing for the pilgrims and it’s the best way to start the Camino. I totally recommend
After a great but hard walk from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port you are welcomed into the monastery. Beds surprisingly good, paper linen where offered but we used our own. Everthing is well organized and a great experience for one night even if there was a lot of snoring. I recommend you to attend the evening mass (18:00) and eat dinner (19:00) afterwards at the hotel. The dinner and breakfast is a great alternative if you take into consideration the amount of money you pay.
