I’d walked 15 miles or so on the Camino when I arrived at Hostal la Codorniz - or thought I arrived. The listed street address isn’t correct; the hotel is around back. And that confusion and delay after 15 miles (the last of 125) was extra hard and extra frustrating. The interior is pretty worn. I kept wondering if the hotel was up for sale. But the staff (who also ran the cafe) was wonderful, patient with my lousy Spanish, finding ways to communicate, and serving some satisfying food, beer, and vino tinto.
We didn’t eat at the restaurant but stayed at the hostel which was quite poor. The room was grubby and tired and the beds were creaky and uncomfortable. I think our room was above the kitchen as we had the constant noise from a squeaky door until 11.
I chose to eat here because they make home cooked pizza in a wood fired oven. Promising. When it arrived it looked great (see photo). However, the base was crunchy. Not crispy, but crunchy, really hard. So disappointing. The staff were pleasant and gave me ice to put on my poor pilgrim foot, but please do not order pizza here!
Food to grease to be eating. Especially the mollejas plate, do not order this. Other food can be better.
Great staff and room! Loved our stay here.
