Viloria de Rioja is a small village with historical significance on the Camino de Santiago. Founded in the 10th century, it is located in the province of Burgos, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León, Spain. The village is known for being the birthplace of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, a prominent figure in the development of the Camino de Santiago during the 11th century. Santo Domingo, born as Domingo García in 1019, dedicated his life to improving the infrastructure and safety of the pilgrimage route. He built bridges, roads, and hospices to aid the pilgrims on their journey. In Viloria de Rioja, you can visit the Church of San Pedro, which houses a baptismal font believed to be the one used for Santo Domingo's baptism. The village also has a modest albergue for pilgrims to rest, reflecting the spirit of hospitality that Santo Domingo promoted along the Camino.
