I am happy to be staying here. I'm grateful for the room our group was given. The service is top tier and Madeleine is an amazing host. Take the time to book this place.

I had a womderfull stay in this nice house. Great beds, good breakfast and a warm welcome. Toilets could be better, but not enought to not give 5 stars.

on the camino francés we had many unforgettable stays — unique places that became little highlights of the journey. but walking the central portuguese route, the accommodations felt waaaay more modest. municipal albergues were functional but bare, private ones more comfortable but often without much soul or sense of community. we even tried a donativo in barcelos but it was completely different from all those donativos we lived in before. due to it we really appreciated our stay in rubiães at ninho ❤️ it was indeed smth special and we felt blessed to have stumbled into it. we had originally booked a nearby hostel in rubiães, a tiny village nestled in the lush green hills of minho — a region of wine, granite houses and soft morning mists. but when we arrived, horsie (usually the more tolerant one) took one look at the cramped, stuffy dorm full of local students and flatly refused to stay 😁🙏 so we turned back to the road, tired and unsure — and just around the corner, we saw it. a beautiful old stone house, tucked gently into the hillside, caught our attention. something about it felt different. we entered. and knew immediately we had found something unique and special. the place is called ninho — the pilgrim nest. it feels less like a hostel and more like a lovingly curated family museum. it’s run by marlen, a former pilgrim herself and the great-granddaughter of the woman who once called this place home. the story behind it is also interesting. the house was first built in the late 18th century by father vaz, who returned from brazil with dreams of building a home with a chapel on the sacred camino. he died before it was completed, and the promise passed to his beloved niece, josefina antónia — a local poet (?) whose photos and books still grace the shelves of the house. she made it a home. raised seven children. cultivated the land. produced vinho verde. and, long before guidebooks or booking apps, opened her doors to weary pilgrims — with soup, shelter, and silence. but after her death, the house fell silent for two centuries. until marlen, adrift and grieving, walked the camino herself and heard a quiet but undeniable call in santiago: to come home. finish the promise. awaken what was forgotten. with no money, no plans — only faith and two hands — she began. stone by stone, year by year, she restored it, modified slightly, modernised windows and some parts of the house. the result is ninho: heritage albergue, living memory of her family. we arrived dusty, quiet, grateful. and were immediately drawn in — by the careful preservation of objects, the handwritten notes, the art on the walls, the gentle reverence for the region’s culture. marlen, now a published author, even has her own book in the common room. it’s dedicated to josefine but is in portuguese so i could only catch the rhythm — but even that was beautiful. our stay there was calm and grounding. and looking back, it was my favourite albergue of all 11 days walking the camino português. because some places still hold stories in their walls. and even if you don’t know them all, you feel them. you become — if only briefly — part of the long, winding thread that ties one pilgrim to another, across generations. if you’re anywhere near rubiães, don’t miss this place. and if you do go — give a warm hug to marlen from us ☺️🙏
