We loved this hotel mainly for its stunning sunrise and sunset views, they are truly its best feature. The building is indeed quite old, and some improvements in cleaning and maintenance would make the experience even better, as a few details felt a bit outdated. We chose not to dine at the hotel’s restaurant because the menu lacked variety and the prices were a bit high. However, there is a nearby place called Fronteira Gastrobar that we highly recommend. From the hotel entrance, there is a passageway to the right that leads directly there in just two minutes. The hotel staff didn’t seem to know about it and told us we had to exit the fortress, but taking that path is much easier if you want to enjoy delicious tapas. Breakfast was good for a short stay, and the lady serving it, originally from Argentina, was very friendly and attentive. Overall, we recommend this hotel for one night to enjoy the breathtaking views, but not for a longer stay.
The setting for the pousada in the Fortaleza of Valença is unrivalled. Superb views from our room, the dining room and the terrace outside. The rooms are decorated in old style with comfortable beds but the fittings (3 plugs in one socket, old wiring and a strange automatic light in the bathroom) could do with updating. The staff are friendly and helpful, especially the lady in reception and the one serving in the morning. Breakfast could have had more choice for a top tier hotel. No natural yoghurt. Hot options were scrambled eggs with a little bacon and sausage sliced. Good choice of fruits and delicious cakes. All in all a good option in the Fortaleza
The views are breathtaking. The hotel is in need of updating, but the staff is extremely helpful, friendly, and very nice. The restaurant remains closed except for breakfast service.
A special stay inside the Valença fortress. We really enjoyed our stay at the Pousada de Valença. It has a classic, welcoming feel — more like a family-run inn than a hotel. The staff were kind and attentive, and made everything easy for us. Our room was spacious and very comfortable, with beautiful views across the hills and the Minho River into Spain. Getting a room with a balcony and view is definitely worth it. The setting inside the walled fortress is one of a kind — quiet, historic, and full of charm. We’d happily stay again.
We stopped here for drinks & snacks whilst on an excursion in the area. The hotel is situated in a lovely location with views over the river and surrounding area. It was clean, the staff spoke good English but it was average otherwise. The food and drinks were OK but we've had better in local cafes in the town.
