On a road trip through northern Portugal, we stayed here one night and overall had a very good experience. The staff were gracious, friendly, and thoughtful, and communicated clearly in excellent English. The guesthouse is rustic but clean and comfortable. Our room was spacious yet cozy, with a large bed (two twins pushed together), a small kitchen area, and a couch. I can’t speak for the other four or five rooms—they’re all a bit different—but ours was pleasant and quiet. All of the other guests were hiking the Camino de Santiago, and since the guesthouse mainly serves pilgrims, they offer a hearty supper for an extra charge. The meal was simple Portuguese fare but well-prepared and tasty. We really enjoyed visiting with the other travelers at dinner and again at breakfast. There were a couple of minor maintenance issues in the room—nothing major, just small things that could use a little attention. The setting is rural, but nearby suburban sprawl and some light industry take away a bit of the authentic countryside feel. On the plus side, it’s less than a 20-minute drive from the airport, which makes it very convenient for travelers.

Lovely courtyard property furnished in the traditional manner. We saw Casa Mandela across the fields as we were walking along the Camino and were a little concerned as to where the entrance was. We continued along the main road until we saw a sign post to the left. The welcome was friendly and we were soon checked in and shown to our room which was laid out in the traditional manner but was, at the same time, clean and comfortable. We asked about washing our clothes and were told there is a large water trough/tank in the corner where people also dip their feet. We thought this was a little odd but the member of staff confirmed that the tank was fed by a spring and it was fine to wash clothes in it. In fact there was a small washing line with pegs by it. What we didn’t realise was that these tanks are common to see along the Camino. In days of old, this would have been a fairly standard way of washing clothes. The food was normal Portuguese fare of a good standard. It was lovely to chat to the other diners, the majority of whom were embarking on the Camino. In fact, we were lucky enough to bump into a couple of them from time to time which enriched our journey.

Fabulous hotel. Excellent location and the team were so friendly. Great breakfast and they went out of their way to make us a great vegan bean dish and vegetable soup. The rooms are very traditionally furnished which is perfect for the location but it has all the modern amenities. Highly recommend. Buen Camino
