1 / 5 Do yourself a favor and do not book this place. It’s overpriced, far from both the cathedral and bus station, and the room I booked (room 14) had a bed bug infestation (4+ adult and baby bed bugs). You will not get a refund for your troubles either. I have been trying for 2 months to get a refund and they have been giving me the run around the entire time when trying to get a refund from them through booking.com. I don’t need the money, but for the troubles of spending my last day on vacation washing and drying my clothes and then being afraid of bringing bed bugs back home I do believe compensation (which they confirmed they would provide) should have been given.
I was there for 2 nights in early October. The first morning we got up slightly later as we had just finished the Camino and were tired so I’m sure the bed bugs had gone back into hiding before we woke up, but the second morning we got up at 4am (had to leave very early to walk to the bus station which is very far from this hostel!), We woke up and my friend found a total of 5 bugs all over the bed, both adults and babies which means there is an infestation there. I have a very big fear of bed bugs, checked every bed every night during my trip, checked every review, but somehow I missed the Sept 29th 2025 review on Booking.com of another traveler stating the place had bed bugs and they did not receive a refund for their troubles. When I reported the bed bugs, they immediately took responsibility but then tried to put the blame on me and the other places I have stayed. As mentioned, I checked every single bed during my walk, even had bed bug spray, sprayed all my stuff with permethrin before my trip and never saw signs of bed bugs along my trip UNTIL this overpriced hostel. What is funny is we have heard most places in the city have bed bugs so we purposely booked this place thinking we would be safe, but no. If you’re afraid of bed bugs don’t book a place just because it costs a bit more. We made that mistake with this place, but never again.
They told me they would give me a refund by having me provide them with my bank account number. This is not the way I paid and I did not feel comfortable giving them this information, so we decided to go the route of doing the refund through Booking.com. Booking.com has emailed them multiple times (‘I’ve received an email notification on my end every time this email had been sent to them), called them (I’ve been put on hold during these times so I know they are calling them), Booking.com also gave me an email to provide to them so that they can email it and just say the refund has been approved. At that point I received a response from the hostel stating they weren’t open and would get back to me, yet they’re messaging me and I noticed that I could book the hostel at that time which means they were not closed. I tried to contact them a few more times, but was left on read so I have given up.
Someone had the same complaint about bed bugs just a week earlier (Sept 29, 2025, review that I unfortunately missed before booking) which I mentioned. I am updating this review due to a lengthy and unusual message I received from the property last night, threatening legal action against me for assuming they did not take care of the issue. I can't assume they still have bed bugs, but they had bed bugs in September and October, as reported by another reviewer and me.
5 / 5 Artilleiro hotel is one of the most hospitable, cozy, and welcoming place I have ever stayed at. My last couple of days on the Camino were quite challenging due to health issues. The wonderful hostesses made sure I had everything I could possibly need to recover, rest, and arrive to the airport on time. Dear team of Artilleiro, I can’t thank you enough for your gentle care, attention, and the beauty you create in your hotel. Next time I am in Santiago, I know where to stay. ❤️
2 / 5 Originally I was going to give this pension a 4 star review. The reason being that, although the room was quite small, didn't have air con, and the bathroom was quite dated, we liked the decor and the fact that the location wasn't right in the city centre, plus the lady helping us at reception was lovely.
The reason though I dropped 2 stars off my originally intended score though was that, although we paid for our stay immediately at checkin, I found two attempted charges on my card the day after checkout, one for the reservation amount, and one for a higher amount. As soon as I realised this (as I was boarding our flight home), I immediately called the hotel and the lady apologised saying that the colleague hadn't marked our stay as paid. I sent via WhatsApp the proof of payment to ensure they wouldn't attempt to charge me again, and they responded apologising for the matter. Although the situation resolved positively, this left me quite uneasy because, were they have been able to charge me again, I am not sure how long it would have took me to get my money back.
5 / 5 This place is charming, the staff were really welcoming and friendly. Travelling with a little one is always tricky but they really made our stay easy. The boutique-style reception, bedrooms and rest of the facilities are beautiful and stylish decorated. I can only highly recommend its comfortable rooms and reasonable price. Thanks Susana for an unforgettable visit. - we will be back for sure.
5 / 5 I stayed here in August for three nights which was an exceptional experience. The pension is an easy 10 mins walk from the cathedral. The service made our stay memorable and comfortable because the hosts were so warm and kind. They provided useful info for our short stay; provided packed breakfasts when we we had to leave before breakfast time; genuine hospitality and eagerness to assist with anything. I would definitely come back for any future trips to Santiago. Nothing amiss.
