We have been very happy to be hosted at Alto Canto. The rooms were renovated, tastefully decorated and there was absolute silence which allowed us to enjoy our sleep. The soaps are from L'Occitane and we enjoyed them a lot. The hosts were very polite and gave us some perfect tips, so we fully enjoyed our stay at Coimbra (we had a Fado session and went to very nice restaus). Breakfast was honest. The house was the residence of the rector of the University and indeed its view is splendid and there is a nice energy flow among the common rooms that guests can use as well. Another strong point is that the Joanine library is at 5 min by walk and also a magnificent bar with a sunset view called Passaporto. Only points to mention are that sb has to walk up the hill for 5-10 min after dinner but there are some restaus close to the hotel if sb wants to not walk at all. Adding a small fridge to the kitchen would be a good idea so to store food. Highly recommended! Best regards from Luxembourg.
One of my best stays in Portugal. Dreamy, palatial (had my own ballroom lol), spacious & private. With an exceptional breakfast and friendly hosts. And only two guest rooms in the entire property. Yes - the initial hill climb with suitcase is a challenge if arriving by train. But so worth it. And no, there is no on-site concierge but friendly owners Ana & Joana pop in to host breakfast and are very responsive on WhatsApp. And Coimbra is a beautiful, intriguing town which I preferred to over-touristed Porto. One of my Portugal picks on my 4 week trip. So book Alto Canto for the perfect stay! Obrigada ladies and all the best.

Great place to stay!
The property is located in a panoramic position just steps from the Joanina Library. The apartment is huge. It features a double living room, a huge kitchen, and a bedroom with a spacious bathroom. There's also a large panoramic terrace. Breakfast was delicious. Ana, the owner, was extremely kind and always available via WhatsApp for our every need. The quality/price ratio was truly excellent. Highly recommended!
