Albergue Ultreia Castrojeriz

This is my favorite stay so far. My private room was very clean, comfortable and attractive with a nice private bathroom and shower and towels. The hosts are so friendly and helpful and worked through my lack of Spanish. They accommodated my vegetarian request for dinner and it was good. The wonderful tour of the ancient wine cellar was so fun and funny. There are sinks for washing clothes and a sunny place for drying. I highly recommend this stay.

We had a great stay here , went to the wine cellar in the evening and our host had us all laughing so much giving us a sample afterwards . Also showed us how the grapes were compressed by a corkscrew system which is over the kitchen table . Even had a welcome card in Gaeilge ( Irish language ) Thank you from Antonio -Spain . quirky couple running this albergue! the rooms are over than your average albergue, and there is a really lovely garden space up the top with space to hang clothes in the sun and a cold plunge pool to rest tired feet! the tour of the wine cellar below is the main draw for this albergue, which was interesting, the couple don’t speak any english at all really (which is obviously understandable and not expected being in spain!!) so the tour is mostly just looking down there, not much information is provided. i opted not to have the dinner, so can’t comment on that. but the breakfast was really not good.. they charge €4 for a filter coffee and a few tiny slices of stale toast.. for this kind of standard i would expect that to be included in the €15 for the bed. i am really surprised when albergues don’t provide a better breakfast knowing that we are about to walk 20-30km! there was no protein or nutrition at all.

The owners are really welcoming, lovely and also funny! The albergue is really cool because of the ancient structure, the fresh little pool in the garden and the central location. They offer a free tour of their little medieval bodega explaining very interesting things and let you tasting the wine😍

I am only commenting a service. When staying in Castrojeriz (wife walking the Camino) we wanted to buy some local wine. Seing them advertisin a roman wine cellar we visited the establishment but they were actually just ignoring the question and the only thing we could buy was a glass of BAD RED WINE. Rooms; I like animals, but walking the Camino, I don't want to use the bed after being used by previous guest and his dog (some people have no problem sharing the bed with their domestic animals)
