The city's most iconic landmark is the Burgos Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is a stunning example of Gothic architecture. Construction began in 1221 under the reign of King Ferdinand III of Castile and was completed in the 16th century. The cathedral houses the tomb of the legendary Castilian hero, El Cid, and his wife, Doña Jimena.
