Castañeda is a small village with historical significance on the Camino de Santiago. In the 12th century, during the construction of the Santa María la Real Monastery in nearby Aguilar de Campoo, large quantities of limestone were transported from quarries in Castañeda to the construction site. This limestone was used to build the iconic Romanesque architecture of the monastery.
