The church was once part of a larger Templar complex, as the Knights Templar played a vital role in protecting pilgrims on their journey to Santiago de Compostela. The Iglesia de Santa María la Blanca also houses the tombs of several members of the Castilian nobility, including Doña Urraca López de Haro, the wife of King Fernando III of Castile, and their son, Infante Felipe.
