Camping de Castro

We had a very disappointing experience at this campsite. When we arrived, it quickly became clear that the facilities were in a very poor condition. Many things were dirty, broken, or not working at all. For example, all washing machines and most of the lights, and electrical points did not work. The sanitary area was especially bad. It smelled strongly of urine, and many of the toilets had visible stains, including feces and even blood. The whole area was very dirty, with cigarette butts, trash, and general filth everywhere. Because of this, we did not even feel comfortable taking a shower. The tent field was also poorly maintained. The grass was very long, and when I walked across it in the evening and morning my feet became completely wet. There were also dog droppings scattered around the field. On top of that, a very bright floodlight illuminated the area throughout the night, making it difficult to sleep. The most frustrating part came the next morning when we spoke to the reception. We asked why nobody had warned us about the condition of the campsite. The receptionist told us that the campsite is technically closed and currently under reconstruction. She admitted that she had made a mistake by not informing us before we checked in. Naturally, we then asked why we were charged the full price if the campsite should not even be open. Unfortunately, the receptionist could not give any explanation other than saying sorry. The owner of the campsite was also present during this conversation, but he did not show any interest in the situation and did not even look at us while we were speaking. It is unacceptable to receive guests under these circumstances and still expect them to pay €27 for a night. In its current state, this place is not worth even €5. Very disappointing experience. I would strongly advice everyone to keep far away from it.

Good hostel to stay in for the Camino, but don't expect much. Chef doesn't like people who don't speak fluent Spanish, but he should remember us Brits pay his wage.

So, we were not fans, the bar staff,food and drink were really good but the price pre arranged on the telephone suddenly went up upon arrival! The tent and camper area are on a rough field at the bottom of a chalet site were everyone is clearly living and not on holiday. The toilets and showers are up the steep hill near the bar so if you need to use the toilet at night you have a hike to do so, the camping area is floodlit so when you're in your tent it glows like the morning sun. The pool water was green ? We stayed in a lot of campsites in Spain and unfortunately this one ranked the lowest. Would I stay for a camping holiday ? NO but was it convenient for the Bilbao ferry ? YES. The bar staff and food were good, the views were great but I would only stay in a camper van in future so you didn't have to hike to the toilet in the night ! I think overall 3 stars is fair because if they had more accessible toilets and A better camping area it would be much better site. The general atmosphere was more of a housing area than a holiday.

Place was really promising at the end of the Camino etapa from Portulagete to Castro Urdiales but bed was so unconfortable and room had no windows only doors so the smell in the room wasn't the best. Showers weren't working- from 4 only 1 was in order. Definitelly wouldn't recommend it.

A bad experience. We came with a caravan and were placed in a field outside the site with others with tents or cars. No water and very long and steep to get to the toilets and shower. These were dirty and in really bad condition. Pool was nice and clean and the staff friendly. We got our money back when we left the site early. A place we will not visit again.
