About this stop
A little about Santo Domingo de la Calzada
Santo Domingo de la Calzada is a historic town on the Camino de Santiago, known for its rich history and architectural heritage. Founded in the 11th century by Saint Dominic de la Calzada, the town was established to assist and support pilgrims on their journey to Santiago de Compostela. Saint Dominic, a devout Christian, dedicated his life to improving the pilgrimage route by building bridges, roads, and hospitals.
The town's most iconic landmark is the Cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, which houses the tomb of Saint Dominic and a unique medieval altarpiece. The cathedral also features a peculiar legend involving a live rooster and hen, which are kept inside the church as a symbol of a miracle that occurred in the 14th century. According to the legend, a young pilgrim was falsely accused of theft and hanged, but miraculously survived due to Saint Dominic's intervention. When the boy's parents informed the local judge, he dismissed their claim, saying the boy was as alive as the roasted chickens on his plate. At that moment, the chickens came back to life, and the boy was saved.
Santo Domingo de la Calzada's historical significance as a support center for pilgrims has made it an essential stop on the Camino de Santiago, where modern-day pilgrims can appreciate its rich history and vibrant traditions.
