Hospital de Orbigo

Hospital de Órbigo is a historic locality on the Camino de Santiago, known for its iconic medieval bridge, Puente de Órbigo. The bridge, originally built in the 13th century, spans the Órbigo River and was an essential crossing point for pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela. Its construction was commissioned by the Knights Hospitaller, who also established a hospital nearby to provide care for the pilgrims, hence the name "Hospital de Órbigo." The town is also famous for the legend of the "Passo Honroso," a knightly tournament held in 1434 by the local knight, Don Suero de Quiñones. He challenged any knight who wished to cross the bridge to a jousting duel to prove their worth and honor. This event lasted for a month and attracted knights from all over Europe. Today, the town celebrates this historic event with an annual medieval festival, recreating the atmosphere of the time and paying homage to its rich history.
